Blogging for Fun

Although blogging can be used for a variety of other purposes such as generating income, promoting a cause and providing information there are many bloggers who enjoy blogging simply because it is fun. These bloggers enjoy blogging for reasons such as staying in touch with friends, expressing themselves or keeping a record of important events. This article will explain how blogs can be used for these purposes.

Blogging to Stay in Touch with Friends

Staying in touch with friends and family members is just one of the many reasons a person may wish to start a blog. This is especially useful for those who move far away from their friends and family members. Staying in touch by phone, regular visits and even email is not always easy. This is because it can be difficult to keep up long distance interactions with several different people at once. However, by maintaining a blog, a person can greatly simplify the process of staying in touch with friends and family members because they do not have to repeat information in individual phone calls or emails or make time to visit several different people.

When maintaining a blog, the individual can choose to post a variety of information and photos. Through this information and photos the blog owner can keep others informed about current events in his life. Friends and family members can view the blog at their convenience to catch up on important events in the blog owner’s life and in most cases can post comments to the blog owner. They can also read comments from others. This is beneficial if those viewing the blog know each other because they can not only stay in touch with the blog owner but also have a chance to communicate with other friends and family members through the comments section of the blog.

Blogging as a Form of Expression

Some bloggers begin blogging as a form of expression. They may right poetry, songs, short stories or even use the blog to vent about personal events or politics. These bloggers may wish to keep their blog private or can make the blog available to the public. Keeping the blog private is sort of like keeping a diary or a journal. It gives the blogger a multi-media form of expressing himself without the risk of others discovering his true feelings, innermost dreams or frustrations. Other bloggers opt to make these blogs public. This may be for a number of different reasons. Sharing these feelings with others allows the blogger to reach others who may have the same interest as the blogger.

Bloggers who use their blog as a form of personal expression may want to be cautious and consider the decision to make a blog public. This is important because the blog owner may initially not see problems with allowing others to view his personal thoughts. However, over time he may realize his blog could either be offensive to others or could result in problems if friends or family members view the blog.

Blogging to Keep a Record of Events

Another common reason for blogging is to keep a record of important events. Examples of some types of events which a blogger may wish to document include a pregnancy, weddings, vacations, sporting events or completion of school events. Using blogs to keep a record of these events gives the blogger an opportunity to record daily events in one simple location where they can easily look back on the blog or share the postings with others who might be interested in the events. In these cases the blog can serve as a form of scrapbook documenting the events as they occur. The blog owner can post as often as he desires and may choose to include elements such as photos, music, audio files and video files into the blog. The blog can also be designed to suit the events being documented. For example a journal depicting a vacation may have backgrounds, fonts and colors representing the vacation location while a pregnancy blog may feature elements which represent pregnancy, babies and being parents.

Kuta and Sea Turtles

Who aren’t familiar with the beauty of Kuta beach? Tourists both from foreign and domestic visits the beach every day to see the famous surf. They also enjoy the splash of heat and it’s enchantment of sunset. Surprisingly none consider that Kuta beach is also home for sea turtle.

Kuta beach is one of destinations of sea turtle to lay their eggs. They eggs face many threats before they can hatch and survive to reach the sea. However, Kuta Beach Security Guard (Satgas Pantai Kuta) and ProFauna have been cooperating to save turtle eggs that laid on the beach. This program puts aside such opinion that Balinese are fond of consuming turtle meat. There turn out to be many who care about turtle protection like local Kuta community.

The landing of sea turtle

Since 2002 until 2007 there were hundreds of sea turtle nest fund and rescued in Kuta beach. In every landing of sea turtles, satgas pantai Kuta directly contact ProFauna to do immediately action required to protect the nested eggs. Eggs that are laid too near to water face a high risk of being submerged. To save these eggs, they are moved to hatchery facilities without disturbing them.

Sea turtle lay eggs on March until September, and they will hatch between May and October. So far, turtle species that lay eggs on Kuta beach is Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea).

Between 2002 and 2007 there were more than 8,000 eggs laid on Kuta beach, and 6,000 of them were successfully hatched and released to the ocean. This means that 75% eggs are saved. In 2005 turtle tagging program was started, 17 turtle were tagged in the period of two years up to 2007.

The turtle race

Releasing turtle hatchings is interesting to tourist in Kuta beach. Many tourists especially foreign tourists involved in the releasing activity. ProFauna called this activity Turtle Race. These activities have become a special event for tourists in Kuta beach and have increased tourists interest to Kuta beach and also serve as a promoting activity to save the sea turtles.

Sea turtle conservation program in Indonesia will be successful if it gains support from the community and law enforcement upheld by the government against the turtle trade. Giving big sentence to the turtle traders and appreciating community that support the turtle conservation program will help 6 species of sea turtles in Indonesia waters.

We also need your support for maintenance the facilities and equipment to protect the sea turtle that lay the eggs at Kuta beach. Your donation for this activity will be a big contribution!

Support us to save the sea turtles!

From Kuta Beach Let’s Save The Sea Turtle

Kuta beach is very well known as a main tourist destination in Bali, nowadays also known as one of the turtle nest sites of Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Since 2002, Satgas Pantai Kuta (Kuta Security Beach Guard), ProFauna Indonesia and BKSDA Bali (Foresty Dept.) have been working together to protect turtles that lay eggs on Kuta Beach. Hatchling release activity has become special attraction for tourist who comes to Kuta beach, which has increased image of Bali regarding turtle conservation issue.

The ocean ambassador

Swimming the oceans when dinosaurus once roamed the earth, sea turtle are flagships for conserving the ecosystem they inhabit. Despite their important role in the underwater web of life, as well as their intrinsic and economic value of communities, these creatures are fast disappearing from our ocean.

Threats to sea turtle survival

Food, souvenirs and tortoiseshell (hawksbill turtle shell) harvest in Indonesia currently pose a considerable threat to the region’s turtle populations. Improvements in fishing technology and the growth of large scale industries in which sea turtle products are sold for profit have meant that sea turtles, particularly greens and haksbills, have become locally scarce.

Rubbish also a threat. Turtle become tangled in old nets and fishing line strangling and drowning them. If turtles mistakenly eat plastic bags, their intestines become blocked and they starved to death.

Sea turtle protection

All sea turtle species in Indonesian waters are protected by Indonesian regulation based on Act No. 5 year 1990 about Conservation on natural Resources and Ecosystem. Catching, harming, killing, storing, owning, keeping, transporting and trading in protected wildlife is prohibited, whether dead or alive. Person convicted of such crime shall be sentenced to 5 years maximum imprisonment and fine up maximum Rp 100 million (US$11,000).

What you can do

The pressure of escalating human population, economic development and consumerism has placed sea turtles in the line of plan and animals threatened by such global pressure. The extinction of this extraordinary animals would be loss of some the oldest and most unusual of this planet’s inhabitants. Turtles and human can co-exist. You can help personally by:

  • Refusing to buy sea turtles product (tortoiseshell jewelry, souvenirs, meat and eggs)
  • Not throwing plastic bags, fishing line and other rubbish into the sea or onto the beach.
  • Following the turtle watching guidelines whenever you encounter a nesting sea turtle or hatchlings.
  • Supporting conservation agencies that are trying to reduce turtle harvests to ecologically sustainable level, and by assisting turtle research and conservation by reporting dead or injured turtles to turtle hotline.

Hint for successful turtle watching

Sea turtle are easily disturbed by light or movement, especially when leaving the water, crossing the beach and digging the nest chambers. To have successful turtle-watching experience visitors should follow these simple rules:

  • Keep the use of light to absolute minimum; carry only a small, low powered torch.
  • Do not approach closely or shine lights on turtles leaving the sea or moving up to the beach.
  • Avoid excess noise and sudden movement.
  • Be patient while the turtle performs her nesting ritual. The large crowd, the more likely the turtle will be disturbed.
  • Wait until the turtle is laying before shinning lights or touching her. Keep this to a minimum.
